Conflicts of Sri Lanka

I thought it would be appropriate to give a bit of background on the historical and current events of Sri Lanka, given the setting of Funny Boy. Here is a timeline including important events in Sri Lanka's history leading up to the 30-year civil war.


Currently, there is some unrest dealing with the Sri Lankan army deserters. They are all being granted amnesty, except for those who were involved in criminal activity. There is also fear that hostilities will arise again, and reports that training camps exist in Tamil Nadu, training rebels to assassinate government officials. India's Ministry of External Affairs deny this, although the suspicions remain because the state is home to many ethnic Tamils. In addition, the Sri Lanka government is facing accusations of war crimes and acts of torture committed by its security forces.
