Schubert's "Death and the Maiden"

Here's the first few minutes of the string quartet that plays the title role in Dorfman's "Death and the Maiden." What do people think the piece has to do with the play?

  1. If we're analyzing the music itself, I think there's a mix of suspense and pleasentry that parallels the play. But since the song was played to sooth Paulina's, and other victims, pain during torture, her reaction to it has been conditioned to react to the song in remembrance of her torture. It also could pertain to how popular culture during times of genocide or war; songs, novels, movies, etc... how they are associated with that time. And even if people try to forgive and forget, there will always be reminders because culture and development are not just put on hold during such times- especially when the perpetrators are the government and the torture is committed discrtelely. Basically, after such a terrible experience for the entire country, the mistrust is omnipresent and cannot be mended, atleast not anytime soon. That might be a stretch, but I think all of Dorfman's messages and motifs are meant to relate to the big picture while the characters represent the conflict of mistrust within the country and countries like Chile.
