I found yet another image relevant to Persepolis while surfing the internet. This time, it's directly related to what I brought up in class the other day about the part in which the TV explains how the veil is used to protect women from being raped. This woman protester is saying differently. (In case you can't read it, her sign says "A woman dressed like this STILL gets raped. Whats ur excuse now?") Thoughts?
this photo is her way of saying that the veil should not be forced upon a woman if she does not want to wear it. a long dress and veil will not stop a rapist if a woman is targeted. People could walk around naked still doesn't mean they are asking to get raped. Covering oneself head to toe should be one's own decision and not decided for them.
ReplyDeleteIn the end of Persepolis Marji talks about the double standard for men and women. Men can dress how they want and women cannot look at them or be attracted to them, but if a woman gets raped it is her fault for showing a few strands of hair. If women have to cover up with a veil, there should be a similar law for men. Making this law just for women portrays women as meek and as victims and gives men power.
ReplyDeleteThe woman is expressing how there is always some sort of justification for what women are told to wear and now the government needs to come up with a new excuse as this one has been disproved. As we have read in Persepolis, the government had some laws that seemed nonsensical to us but were backed up by illogical arguments, ie, women must wear a veil in order to avoid being raped.
